Elika - Trying Got Us Nowhere

Elika’s debut album “Trying Got Us Nowhere” was recorded, mixed, and produced by Jason Martin of Starflyer 59 in 5 days. This album is Elika’s first release on Fiercely Independent Records, a UK-based independent record label.

Formed in New York in 2005 by Evagelia Maravelias and Brian Wenckebach, Elika describe their dreamy music as “blissed-out ambience with head-nodding beats that range from Downtempo to Trance to IDM.”

They mix spacey female vocals with gauzy, textured guitars; field recordings; and crisp drum programming to create incredibly visual songs with the atmosphere of childhood and layers of detail. Describing their influences, Eva and Brian mention Slowdive, Karen Carpenter, Boards of Canada, Nico, Squarepusher and Flying Saucer Attack.
Favourite tracks “Confidence Kill My Spirit”. Not a lenghty track but totally vocal(less) and more sort of an (intro) in the middle of the album. “To The End” another fav’ gradually waves up and down. Also “Nowhere” and this is where Elika just electronically fills all the hollow spaces. Oh dear, looks like Im about to brief every tracks. In a nutshell Elika is a good mellow listening journey. Nothing too heavy, nothing too deprssive slightly pop”ish” but with a fair loads of textured guitars).

“Elika from Brooklyn—an incredibly exciting, radical fusion of shoegaze and electronica elements.” - Ulrich Schnauss “These kids are so good, they could battle the sun.”

Destroyalldreamers - Wish I Was All Flames

Destroyalldreamers is an instrumental shoegaze band from Montreal, Quebec. Through the use of numerous signal path alterations, namely effect pedals, they build ever higher walls of sound - coupled with solid songwriting - to create beautiful, lush soundscapes. Their sophomore release, Wish I Was All Flames, builds upon that premise.

Keser - Esoteric Escape

Keser is a Scottish two-piece band from Edinburgh, UK. Fusing an experimental, unique guitar style with synthesised beats has resulted in a new progressive form of guitar-based seraphic electronica.

According to Is This Music? magazine, they "achieve in their tracks a new sound drenched in guitar-based electronica...they are able to explore the syntax of electronica with awe and excitement". (Issue 24)

Ambient and ethereal sounds elevate subtly, building up into crushing waves and returning back again. The vaporous instrumentals and melodic chimings are only anchored by the electro beats and unconditional ambience throughout.

The debut album 'Esoteric Escape' has captured both the Keser live feel and refined recordings into 12 tracks and diverges into the realms of post-rock melodic electronica, with a "music as a metaphor for life" mentality evident on every track - songs which seem to aptly soundtrack a person's journey.

The name Keser was chosen from a graffiti tag seen around Edinburgh with no real meaning intended.

Lunatic Soul - Lunatic Soul

Lunatic Soul is the solo project of Mariusz Duda, vocalist and bassist of Polish progressive rock band Riverside. The self-titled debut was released on October 13th, 2008. For the album, he enlisted the help of several friends from different bands such as Quidam, Indukti and Riverside. In stark contrast to his main outfit, Lunatic Soul contains no electric guitars at all and can be best described as a mix of ambient and progressive elements - Duda himself calls the sound “oriental-alternative”.

HitchcockGoHome! - You can not be serious (Amazing..)

5 Paris–based post-rock-folksters morphing from Nick Drake into Mogwai at the blink of a banjo –and of 3 guitars, which helps.

Melancholic or spirited, and mostly both at once, HitchcockGoHome!’s music mirrors both the love of playing and the reflective souls of the 5 musicians, who let voices and instruments play changing roles to suit their fancy. A banjo, subtly expanding density or sudden strokes of the guitars, a bow passed on from hand to hand, rich bass lines, male and female voices that do not mind staying in the background sometimes, add to the uniqueness of HitchcockGoHome!’s style, strong, mellow and/or uplifting, a time-defying blend of folk, rock and post-rock that translates marvellously onstage.

HitchcockGoHome! like to squeeze or stretch simple songs into delicate & complex sonic architectures.

The Very Hush Hush - Evil Milk

The Very Hush Hush began in 2003 as the project of two classically trained pianists. Grant Hazard Outerbridge and Peter Bo Rappmund cover about every base imaginable on their second album, Evil Milk. While I am not familiar with the band’s first effort, this record is said to offer a nosier approach than the duo’s first album. Evil Milk works rather well as the noisy tendencies of the band clash with the subtle beauty of the duo’s piano background. Glorious feedback and rhythmic melodies wash over these movements as the band sounds almost improvisational in their varied approach. The Very Hush Hush choose not to delve into coherent vocals very often but when they do, on the tracks “Soul Projector”, “Wisteria Head” and “Maximillion,” it makes for a lovely proposition. “Gilded” closes the album off in a moving fashion spotlighting some of the duo’s piano work before spiraling into a wave of feedback. Touching all corners between My Bloody Valentine and shoegaze to glitch pop, Evil Milk is an impressive study in patience and talent.
